HAST 2027 · Parent Guide

Confidence on test day comes from familiarity — not luck.

Most of what unsettles a child on test day is not the difficulty of the questions — it is unfamiliarity. Here is what HAST 2027 actually involves, and how to use practice tests to build confidence that is genuinely earned.

The basics

What is HAST?

The Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST) is an assessment developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Schools across Australia use it to identify academically able students for selective entry, scholarships, accelerated classes, and gifted and talented programs.

Crucially, HAST measures higher-order reasoning rather than recall of the school curriculum. Your child cannot revise their way through it the way they might for a science test. That is exactly why so many capable students are caught off guard the first time they sit it — and why structured practice matters far more than cramming.

Test structure

What is on the HAST paper

HAST is offered at two broad levels, and the section names differ slightly between them.

Primary level

Years 5 and 6
  • Mathematical Reasoning
  • Abstract Reasoning
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Written Expression

Secondary level

Years 7 to 11 · three levels
  • Mathematical and Scientific Reasoning
  • Abstract Reasoning
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Written Expression

Worth knowing: the multiple-choice sections are machine-scored, while Written Expression is marked by trained markers against set criteria — so a well-structured, clearly argued piece counts for a great deal. HAST sittings are paper-based, so while online practice is the most efficient way to build the underlying skills, move a few of the later full tests onto paper so the physical format is familiar too.

Timing

How HAST 2027 dates and applications work

HAST is not a single national exam day. Individual schools register their own sitting dates with ACER, and families apply through the school running the program. That has three practical consequences for 2027 entry.

1

Dates vary by school

Check the scholarship or selective entry page of every school on your list, and diarise each closing date separately.

2

Applications close early

Registration deadlines are the thing families most often miss — not the exam itself. Set a reminder a fortnight before each one.

3

Results take time

Marking generally runs to around ten working days before schools begin selection decisions, so offers and interviews follow some weeks later.

Plan backwards. Work back from the earliest sitting date on your list. A preparation runway of one to two school terms is realistic for most families; anything shorter tends to become cramming, which is precisely what HAST does not reward.

Why it works

Why practice tests do the heavy lifting

Five things a timed practice test gives your child that no amount of revision can.

They make the format ordinary

Question styles such as abstract reasoning rarely appear in classroom work, so a child meeting them cold loses minutes just working out what is being asked. After a handful of practice tests, the format stops being a surprise.

They show which section is genuinely weak

Parents are often wrong about where their child struggles. Sectional results replace guesswork with evidence, so study time goes to the area that will move the score most.

They train pacing under real pressure

Most students who underperform are not short on ability — they are short on time. Timed practice teaches two habits: moving on from a stubborn question, and leaving room to plan and review the written piece.

They turn preparation into visible progress

Feedback across several attempts shows a trend line, not a single number. Watching a comprehension score climb over six weeks motivates a child far more than being told they are doing well.

They build confidence that is actually earned

Confidence built on reassurance collapses on test day. Confidence built on having already sat ten timed papers does not. By the time your child walks in, the experience should feel like something they have done many times before — which is the whole point.

Step by step

A simple HAST 2027 preparation plan

Five steps, repeatable across a term. No plan survives a busy family calendar intact — but this one bends without breaking.

1. Start with a baseline

One full, timed practice test before any study. Expect a modest score and say so in advance, so it is treated as a starting point rather than a verdict.

2. Target the weakest section

Three short sessions a week on the section with the lowest result beats an hour of unfocused revision.

3. Write every week

One timed Written Expression piece each week, reviewed against the marking criteria. This is the section families most often neglect and the one where structured practice pays off fastest.

4. Sit a full timed test every two to three weeks

Same start time, no interruptions, no pausing the clock. Move the last two or three onto paper to match the real sitting.

5. Taper in the final fortnight

Light review, no new material, and a proper sleep routine. Nothing learned in the last week will beat turning up rested.

Common traps

Four things to avoid

  • Cramming content. HAST tests reasoning, so memorising facts adds very little.
  • Practising untimed. An untimed test measures ability; a timed one measures what your child can do on the day.
  • Skipping Written Expression. It is the section students most dislike practising, and the one that most often separates candidates.
  • Over-reacting to an early low score. A weak baseline is information, not a prediction. The trend over ten weeks is what counts.
Questions

HAST 2027 FAQs

What does HAST stand for?

HAST is the Higher Ability Selection Test, developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and used by schools across Australia to identify academically able students.

Which year levels sit HAST?

There is a primary level for Years 5 and 6, and secondary levels covering Years 7 to 11 across three separate papers.

Is HAST taken online or on paper?

HAST sittings are paper-based. Online practice is still the most efficient way to build reasoning skills and timing, but it is worth completing some later practice tests on paper so the physical format is familiar.

When is HAST held in 2027?

There is no single national date. Schools register their own sitting dates with ACER, so you need to check the scholarship or selective entry page of each school you are applying to and note its individual closing date.

How long do HAST results take?

Marking generally runs to around ten working days, after which schools begin making their selection decisions. Offers and interviews usually follow some weeks after the sitting.

Can you actually prepare for HAST?

Yes — not by memorising content, but by practising the reasoning question types, building pacing under timed conditions, and writing regularly against the Written Expression criteria.

Give your child the advantage of having already done it

Repeatedly, under time, and with feedback they can act on. That is what turns a nervous first sitting into a familiar one.
