Introduction

What is the ASET / GATE Test?

To secure a place in the Gifted and Talented Secondary Selective Entrance Program, interested students must take an entrance test — the ASET (Academic Selective Entrance Test). This fiercely competitive and standardised test is used to screen and select students fit for the GATE program.

🏫
Where it leadsEntry to Perth Modern School (WA's only fully selective academic school) and academic GATE programs in select WA public secondary schools.
🎓
Who sits itYear 6 students sit the test for entry into the next academic year — Year 7.
🧠
What it testsA student's higher-order cognitive and reasoning skills — not curriculum knowledge.

The ASET comprises 4 tests, of which 3 are multiple-choice and one is an open (written) response. The difficulty level of the ASET increases each year, which means good preparation is absolutely necessary. The ASET is developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER).

The Four Components

ASET test format & structure

Four equally weighted components, completed in a single session of approximately 2 hours 50 minutes.

Reading Comprehension · 35 Q · 35 min

Reading Comprehension

A multiple-choice test where students answer 35 questions in 35 minutes. It assesses the ability to understand and interpret excerpts from various literary genres. The stimulus can come from any genre or subject — each question has four options (A, B, C, D), and the student chooses the most appropriate answer.

Communicating Ideas in Writing · 25 min

Communicating Ideas in Writing

The written-response section, completed in 25 minutes. A prompt — an image, a statement, or both — is provided. It assesses the ability to think creatively, generate original ideas, and communicate them in a structured, organised and coherent form. Style and genre are the candidate's choice, but unoriginal content is penalised.

Quantitative Reasoning · 35 Q · 35 min

Quantitative Reasoning

A multiple-choice test of 35 questions in 35 minutes. Very different from school maths — it tests the ability to logically reason on a quantitative basis: interpreting and extracting information, identifying relationships, patterns, connections, differences and similarities, and problem-solving.

Abstract Reasoning · 35 Q · 20 min

Abstract Reasoning

A multiple-choice test of 35 questions in 20 minutes. It tests problem-solving through pattern problems — students identify, strategise and solve. It measures the capacity to recognise relationships, hypothesise and evaluate. Each question has four options (A, B, C, D).

Other arts programs: Churchlands SHS (Music, 50), Hampton SHS (Dance, 32), and Visual Arts at Applecross SHS, Balcatta SHS and Kalamunda SHS (32 each).

Languages stream

Languages programs

Mount Lawley SHS (32 places, min TSS 209.50) and Rossmoyne SHS (40 places, min TSS 227.00).

Languages applicants complete the ASET and must reach the minimum threshold to qualify for an interview, which contributes 20% to the final ranking (the ASET contributes 80%).

The WA GATE program includes 24 participating schools across Academic, Arts and Languages streams. ALT* indicates a program approved for a lower benchmark because of difficulty filling its cohort. Results are reported as standardised scores compared to the whole cohort and combined into a Total Standard Score (TSS); the minimum threshold for academic program consideration is TSS 209.5, while competitive schools require much higher. Entrance scores vary year to year — use these 2026 figures as a guide and confirm current numbers on the official WA Department of Education website.

Student Writing — tutor review

The use of technology in schools is often debated, and there are strong arguments on both sides of the question.

First and foremost, students can become too reliant on spell-check and search engines without understanding the reasoning behind their answers. This can affect how deeply they learn.

Instead of researching and weighing different sources, they may simply trust the first result they find.

Furthermore, screen time is a growing concern, so balance matters for healthy learning habits.

The Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET) is designed for students aiming to enter WA's selective academic / gifted and talented programs, usually taken in Year 6 for Year 7 entry. Conducted by ACER, it assesses academic potential rather than school grades, across four components: Reading Comprehension, Writing, Quantitative Reasoning and Abstract Reasoning.
What subjects are included in the ASET test WA?
The ASET WA exam includes four components: Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning and Writing. Selectivetrial offers full-length tests and section-wise practice papers for each area.
How can I prepare for the Year 6 Selective Entrance Test in WA?
Practise consistently with ASET online practice tests, review past question types and improve time management. Selectivetrial provides mock exams and structured preparation tools tailored to WA standards, plus a free trial to begin.
Where can I find ASET mock exams online?
You can access realistic ASET mock exams at Selectivetrial.com.au, where practice materials are designed by education experts to match the official ASET structure and difficulty level, with immediate feedback and detailed explanations.
What is the difference between ASET and GATE in WA?
Both are used in WA to assess high-performing students. ASET is the entrance test for academic selective programs, while GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) is the broader program — which can also include specialist streams such as Arts or Languages.
Are there specific tests for the Perth Modern School entrance exam?
Yes. Perth Modern School, WA's only fully academic selective school, uses the ASET for admissions. Selectivetrial offers Perth Modern preparation through dedicated ASET mock tests and writing practice.
What is included in the free trial?
The free trial gives students the feel of an actual time-scored test, with practice questions across Reading Comprehension, Communicating Ideas in Writing, Quantitative Reasoning and Abstract Reasoning for Year 7 entry — including detailed explanations, with no card details required.
How does Selectivetrial help a student prepare for the ASET?
We've built a high-quality question bank from previous papers, curriculum and government sample papers. Practising on our platform builds confidence about the question pattern, the standard of questions and the timing — all essential to scoring well. Our subject-matter experts analyse every pattern and difficulty level, and trial exams reveal exactly how the real test feels in interface, method, difficulty and time management.
Is the ASET hard to crack for Year 6 students?
Yes — the ASET is highly competitive and tests advanced reasoning and academic skills. Selectivetrial breaks complex topics into manageable practice sessions so students prepare smartly and confidently.
Why choose Selectivetrial for ASET preparation in WA?
Selectivetrial is trusted by WA families for structured, syllabus-aligned ASET WA practice tests, writing modules and full mock exams — helping students prepare for selective schools like Perth Modern School with accuracy and efficiency.
What score do you need to get into Perth Modern School?
Based on 2026 data, Perth Modern School required a minimum Total Standard Score (TSS) of about 244.34 — the highest of all GATE schools. Other competitive programs such as Willetton SHS (235.98) and Shenton College (231.55) also sit well above the minimum threshold of 209.5. Scores change each year with the cohort, so treat these as a guide rather than a guarantee.
How many GATE schools are there in Western Australia?
The WA GATE program spans 24 participating schools across three streams: Academic, Arts and Languages. Of these, around 17 offer Academic programs (Perth Modern School being the only fully selective academic school), while the rest deliver specialist Arts or Languages programs. There is also an unlimited-capacity Online Program for eligible regional students.
When is the ASET test held?
For Year 7 entry, the ASET is typically held in early March under standard conditions, with regional and adjusted-conditions testing on later dates that month. Applications usually open in October and close in early February. Always confirm the exact dates for your intake on the official WA Department of Education website.
What is the Total Standard Score (TSS)?
The TSS is a standardised score that combines a student's results across the four ASET components, compared against the entire cohort — it is not a percentage or percentile. The minimum threshold for academic program consideration is 209.5, with competitive schools requiring substantially higher scores.
Can regional students apply for the WA gifted and talented program?
Yes. The program is open to students across the whole state. Regional testing centres operate outside Perth, and regional students offered metropolitan places can access boarding facilities such as City Beach Residential College. An unlimited-capacity Online Program is also available to regional students who meet the minimum threshold.
How long is the ASET and who develops it?
The ASET runs for approximately 2 hours 50 minutes in a single session covering all four components, and is developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). It measures higher-order thinking and reasoning potential rather than curriculum knowledge.
Is coaching necessary, and how does practice help?
Because the ASET tests reasoning rather than memorised content, the Department notes that intensive coaching isn't required and that the free official materials are valuable. What consistent, well-paced practice does add is familiarity with the question style, timing and on-screen experience — which builds confidence and reduces test-day anxiety. Selectivetrial focuses on exactly that: format-accurate familiarisation, not cramming.
What should my child bring on test day?
Generally: the printed ASET testing details, the completed Student Identification Form with a recent photo, at least two lead pencils, an eraser and sharpener, and a drink and snack in a clear bag. Electronic devices, calculators, rulers, dictionaries and books are not permitted. A parent must sign the student in and out. Check the official confirmation email for the exact requirements for your test centre.
How are results and offers handled?
ASET Performance Reports are emailed in early June with scores for each component plus the Total Standard Score. Round 1 offers are released in late June and Round 2 offers in late July, with response options including accept, decline, hold or withdraw. Reserve lists remain active later in the year for any subsequent vacancies.
