NAPLAN Report Important for Year 9 Students.

What is NAPLAN?

The National Assessment Program—Literacy & Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a nationwide, annual, standardised test conducted by the ACARA in liaison with the Ministry of Education. This test is set for students in Year 3, Year 5, Year 7, and Year 9 across the country to evaluate their abilities and capacity to meet the educational outcomes of Australian students.

The NAPLAN consists of four test topics: Conventions of Language, Reading, Writing, and Numeracy. It is conducted over three days.

What is the NAPLAN Report?

Unlike other tests taken by students in Australia, the NAPLAN Test Reports are very different. The concerned authorities publish this nationwide test report in numerous forms, they are-

National Results:

These are interactive online reports that include results for each tested Year level and domain on the basis of state/ territory, gender, language background (excluding English), indigeneity, financial status, parental education and occupation, and geographical remoteness.

School-level Reports:

The results of all the students who were all able to complete the test are compiled together and given in the Student & School Summary Report (SSSR).

Individual Student Report:

The students duly competing in the NAPLAN test receive an Individual Student Report(ISR). These results are provided against the set proficiency standards so that the students and concerned parents/caregivers can obtain detailed and clear information about the student’s progress and achievement.

An important fact to remember by all parents and caregivers is that NAPLAN Test Reports do not include an individual student’s pass/fail evaluation. In contrast, since 2023, these have included results against the proficiency standards, along with the student’s achievement projected with 4 proficiency levels.

Knowing the NAPLAN Proficiency Levels

The NAPLAN Test Report makes use of a set and standardised proficiency standard for all test topics at each Year level. The 4 proficiency levels used for the test reports, are:

  • Exceeding: Results exceed all expectations
  • Strong: results meet reasonable expectations
  • Developing: still need to work on educational skills and abilities to meet expectations
  • Needs additional support: expected learning outcomes not achieved, needs extra work and support to advance at a satisfactory level

The proficiency level is aimed at providing a summary of a student’s academic skills and understanding at a specific Year level. It is also important to note that students whose results are in the top band of the proficiency levels have more academic and critical cognitive skills. On the other hand, those who are in the lower band of the proficiency levels have less critical understanding and academic skills.

Importance of NAPLAN Test Report for Year 9 students

The NAPLAN Test Report is a very good distinguishing assessment of a student’s performance. If a student is able to perform fairly well, he/she is in a safe space for the Year 10 tests. Whereas, if he/she is not performing at a satisfactory level, this report helps analyse and work accordingly for the future.

Hence, the NAPLAN Test Report is an invaluable resource for the Year 9 students, their parents, families/ caregivers for multiple reasons. They are:

a. Understanding Academic Strengths & Weaknesses
