About Victoria Selective School Entrance Exam

What are Victorian Selective Entry High Schools?

The Victorian Selective Entry High Schools are the most prestigious public schools that provide the academically gifted students an accelerated and highly challenging learning environment. 

The four Victorian Selective Entry High Schools are:

• Melbourne High School (Boys only), South Yara
• The MacRobertson Girls’ High School, Melbourne
• Nossal High School, Berwick; and
• Suzanne Cory High, Werribee

Victoria Selective School Entrance Exam Structure

It is a fiercely competitive entrance exam that comes with both ability and achievement tests, divided into five parts, with a duration of three hours. The next year’s entrance test is announced to be held in July, 2023.

The structure of the Victorian Selective School Test is as follows:

The Victoria Selective Entry High Schools (SEHS) test is a two-hour, multiple-choice exam that is used to assess students for entry into selective high schools in Victoria.

The test is divided into five sections:

• Reasoning – Reading: This section tests students’ ability to read and understand written passages. It consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that must be answered in 35 minutes.
• Reasoning – Mathematics: This section tests students’ ability to solve mathematical problems. It consists of 60 multiple-choice questions that must be answered in 30 minutes.
• General Ability – Verbal: This section tests students’ ability to use language and reasoning skills. It consists of 60 multiple-choice questions that must be answered in 30 minutes.
• General Ability – Quantitative: This section tests students’ ability to use number sense and reasoning skills. It consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that must be answered in 30 minutes.
• Writing: This section tests students’ ability to write effectively. It consists of two tasks: a persuasive writing task and a creative writing task. Students have 40 minutes to complete each task.

The SEHS test is a challenging exam, and students should prepare thoroughly by studying the relevant material and practicing with sample questions. The Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority (VCAA) provides a number of resources to help students prepare for the SEHS test, including practice tests, study guides, and information about the test format.
