Overview

Preparing for Year 5 NAPLAN 2027.

By Year 5, your child has already sat NAPLAN once, so the format is familiar and you have a useful reference point in their Year 3 results. Year 5 is a primary-school milestone: the content is broader, reading passages are longer, and numeracy reaches into fractions, decimals and multi-step problems. The 2027 tests run across the March window and cover Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy.

The smart approach at this stage is targeted rather than even. Instead of practising everything equally, use a diagnostic test to find the one or two domains where your child loses the most marks, and concentrate effort there. Year 5 is also the right time to make timed practice a normal habit, so that pacing becomes second nature well before the step up to high school.

What's tested

The four domains, with exact timing.

Every Selectivetrial Year 5 pack matches the ACARA blueprint and the exact question counts and time limits your child will face in the March 2027 window.

📖
40 Q · 50 min

Reading

Comprehension of fiction, non-fiction and reports — inference, main idea and vocabulary in context.

✍️
1 prompt · 42 min

Writing

One narrative or persuasive prompt, marked on theme, structure, grammar and vocabulary.

🔤
50 Q · 45 min

Language Conventions

Spelling, grammar and punctuation aligned to the Australian Curriculum: English.

🧮
40 Q · 50 min

Numeracy

Number & algebra, measurement & geometry and statistics, with calculator items in the upper years.

Skills to focus on

What to work on in each domain at Year 5.

ReadingLonger, more varied texts — fiction, reports and persuasive pieces. Work on inference and author's purpose, not just literal recall.
WritingA narrative or persuasive response, now expected to show clearer structure and more developed ideas. Marked feedback is especially valuable.
Language ConventionsMore demanding spelling and grammar — tense, dialogue punctuation and sentence structure. Regular short drills pay off.
NumeracyFractions, decimals, area and perimeter, and multi-step word problems. Some items are calculator-allowed, so practise both ways.

How to prepare

Build on the Year 3 baseline.

Target the weak domain

Use the Year 3 result, or a quick diagnostic, to find the lowest-scoring domain and spend most of your time there.

Introduce the timer

Year 5 papers run slightly longer than Year 3. A few timed sessions stop the clock from feeling stressful.

Review every mistake

The fastest gains come from reviewing wrong answers with the worked solution — not from doing more new questions.

Start writing early

Draft one narrative and one persuasive piece and get them marked, so structure becomes automatic.

Avoid these

Common Year 5 mistakes.

Ignoring the Year 3 baseline — it tells you exactly which domain to focus on first.

Leaving writing unpractised — it is the domain where targeted feedback moves results fastest.

Practising only untimed — Year 5 papers are longer, so pacing matters more than it did in Year 3.

How results are reported

Understanding your child's NAPLAN result.

Since 2023, NAPLAN results are reported against four proficiency standards rather than numbered bands: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support. Your child receives a result for every domain, showing whether they are meeting the expected level for their year. Practising beforehand does not change the standards themselves — but it helps your child show what they genuinely know, by removing the surprises of format, timing and on-screen tools that can otherwise drag a capable student down.

Common questions

Year 5 NAPLAN 2027 — FAQs.

When is NAPLAN 2027 for Year 5?

NAPLAN 2027 runs from Wednesday 10 March to Monday 22 March 2027 for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The Writing test is sat on Day 1 (Wednesday 10 March), and schools schedule the remaining tests across the nine-day window.

Where can I find Year 5 NAPLAN practice tests online?

Online Year 5 NAPLAN 2027 practice tests are available at Selectivetrial — full-length, ACARA-aligned papers that replicate the real on-screen tools, with instant marking and performance graphs.

What does Year 5 NAPLAN test?

Year 5 NAPLAN assesses four domains: Reading (40 Q · 50 min), Writing (1 prompt · 42 min), Language Conventions (50 Q · 45 min) and Numeracy (40 Q · 50 min).

How should a Year 5 student prepare for NAPLAN?

Use the Year 3 result, or a quick diagnostic, to find the lowest-scoring domain and spend most of your time there.

How are NAPLAN results reported?

Since 2023, results are reported across four proficiency standards — Exceeding, Strong, Developing, and Needs additional support — for each domain, rather than the old numbered bands.

How many practice papers are included in the Year 5 packs?

Selectivetrial's Year 5 packs include 30 full-set, exam-style papers — around 1,300 questions in total — with unlimited attempts and worked solutions for every question.

Are NAPLAN past papers enough on their own?

Past papers help with content familiarity, but NAPLAN is now online and adaptive, so they don't reproduce the interface, timing or tools. Use them early, then move to realistic online practice tests for the simulation phase.

How is Year 5 NAPLAN different from Year 3?

The content is broader, reading passages are longer, and numeracy includes fractions, decimals and multi-step problems. Papers also run slightly longer, so time management becomes more important.

NAPLAN dates, format and domain timing are sourced from ACARA and subject to ACARA updates for 2027. Selectivetrial's NAPLAN materials are exam-style resources created independently and are not an officially endorsed publication of the NAPLAN program.
