EduTest Scholarship & Entrance Test Melbourne-based assessment provider

EduTest provides scholarship and entrance tests used by private and selective schools across Australia. Tests are split into Ability (what a student can reason) and Achievement (what a student has learned), measuring academic potential as well as subject knowledge.

EduTest is widely used for selective entry to Victorian government schools and NSW selective year 8–11 programs, as well as many private school scholarship programs.

ACER Scholarship Tests Australian Council for Educational Research (not-for-profit)

ACER is an independent, not-for-profit organisation with global reputation in educational research. Its Scholarship Tests identify the highest-ability candidates among a high-ability cohort, assessing critical thinking, interpretation and higher-order reasoning — not rote knowledge.

ACER tests are used by hundreds of independent schools across all Australian states for scholarship awards at both primary and secondary level.

Preparation tips

How should students prepare?

📚
Read widely
ACER emphasises that skills are built over a lifetime. Wide reading of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and articles builds comprehension and vocabulary naturally.
⏱️
Practise under time limits
Both tests are timed. Completing timed practice tests helps students pace themselves and manage test anxiety on the day.
🧩
Focus on reasoning
EduTest's ability tests and ACER's reasoning sections cannot be drilled like maths formulas. Practice logical reasoning puzzles and pattern recognition instead.
✍️
Plan your writing
Both tests assess written expression. ACER notes that quality of ideas matters more than length. Students should spend 2–3 minutes planning before writing.
📝
Do official practice tests
ACER sells practice materials through the Parent Account portal. These help students understand question format and build time-management awareness.
🎯
Check the answer sheet
EduTest specifically warns: lost-place errors on bubble sheets cannot be corrected after the test. Students must carefully check each bubble corresponds to the right question.
