Year 7 is the first NAPLAN of high school, and the step up is real — more questions, longer papers and calculator-allowed Numeracy. This page sets out exactly what Year 7 NAPLAN 2027 tests and how to build the stamina and pacing it now demands.
Overview
Year 7 is the first NAPLAN of high school, and the jump from Year 5 is real. Reading and Numeracy each run to 65 minutes, there are more questions to work through, and Numeracy now includes a calculator-allowed section. For many students the challenge is not the difficulty of any single question, but sustaining focus and managing time across a longer paper.
Preparation should reflect that. Alongside revising content, your child needs to build reading stamina, become fluent with the on-screen calculator so it speeds them up rather than slowing them down, and complete full-length timed papers so the pace of the real test feels routine. The 2027 tests are sat across the March window and, as in earlier years, cover Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy.
What's tested
Every Selectivetrial Year 7 pack matches the ACARA blueprint and the exact question counts and time limits your child will face in the March 2027 window.
Comprehension of fiction, non-fiction and reports — inference, main idea and vocabulary in context.
One narrative or persuasive prompt, marked on theme, structure, grammar and vocabulary.
Spelling, grammar and punctuation aligned to the Australian Curriculum: English.
Number & algebra, measurement & geometry and statistics, with calculator items in the upper years.
Skills to focus on
How to prepare
Year 7 Reading runs to 65 minutes with longer passages. Practise sustained reading so focus doesn't fade late in the paper.
Numeracy now includes calculator-allowed questions. Practise with the on-screen calculator so it speeds your child up, not down.
With more questions per paper, time management is the new skill. Full timed mocks teach your child when to move on.
Marked writing feedback lifts results quickly — clear structure and on-topic ideas score well.

Avoid these
Underestimating the step up — Year 5 habits aren't enough for a 65-minute paper.
Avoiding the calculator items — fluency with the on-screen tool saves real time on test day.
Neglecting pacing — running out of time is the most common way to lose easy marks at this level.
How results are reported
Since 2023, NAPLAN results are reported against four proficiency standards rather than numbered bands: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support. Your child receives a result for every domain, showing whether they are meeting the expected level for their year. Practising beforehand does not change the standards themselves — but it helps your child show what they genuinely know, by removing the surprises of format, timing and on-screen tools that can otherwise drag a capable student down.

Common questions
NAPLAN 2027 runs from Wednesday 10 March to Monday 22 March 2027 for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The Writing test is sat on Day 1 (Wednesday 10 March), and schools schedule the remaining tests across the nine-day window.

Year 7 NAPLAN assesses four domains: Reading (50 Q · 65 min), Writing (1 prompt · 42 min), Language Conventions (50 Q · 45 min) and Numeracy (48 Q · 65 min).
Year 7 Reading runs to 65 minutes with longer passages. Practise sustained reading so focus doesn't fade late in the paper.
Since 2023, results are reported across four proficiency standards — Exceeding, Strong, Developing, and Needs additional support — for each domain, rather than the old numbered bands.
Selectivetrial's Year 7 packs include 30 full-set, exam-style papers — around 1,480 questions in total — with unlimited attempts and worked solutions for every question.
Past papers help with content familiarity, but NAPLAN is now online and adaptive, so they don't reproduce the interface, timing or tools. Use them early, then move to realistic online practice tests for the simulation phase.
Yes — Year 7 Numeracy includes a calculator-allowed section as well as a non-calculator section. Practising with the on-screen calculator beforehand helps your child save time.
Papers are longer (Reading and Numeracy run to 65 minutes), there are more questions, and Numeracy introduces a calculator section — so stamina and pacing matter much more.
NAPLAN dates, format and domain timing are sourced from ACARA and subject to ACARA updates for 2027. Selectivetrial's NAPLAN materials are exam-style resources created independently and are not an officially endorsed publication of the NAPLAN program.
