HAST Primary Test - Grab hold of your Dream School

Introduction

What Is HAST?

HAST Primary Test conducts for entries into Top High Schools from Year 7 to Year 12

Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST) is a skill test used by secondary schools to classify academically talented students for enhanced learning and enhancement programs. The test draws upon ACER’s extensive experience in high-stakes testing programs for schools, such as the Selective High School Placement Test in New South Wales, the Ignite program in South Australia and the Queensland’s Academies Student Entrance Test – Brisbane State High school etc.

All practice questions are followed as per ACER format. Some schools in Australia use HAST for placement in the High Performing & Gifted Education Programs. Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST) is an ability test used by secondary schools that identifies the very brightest students for selective entry, accelerated learning and gifted and talented programs. HAST focuses on assessing higher-order, cross-curricular reasoning skills that are characteristic of gifted students.

Full Set Of New Format Papers::

The full set of question papers includes all types of questions similar to the real-time exam questions. Selective Trials follow the same current format of new OC, Selective Tests, NAPLAN, and HAST papers. Our highly qualified group of subject experts of High scoring ATAR tutors and selective school passed out tutors who passionately did their level best to create the many papers here at Selective Trials. All tests are Time managed, and each student will get the same feeling like the real Australian tests. After finishing each test, the student can go back to review and revise all questions with feedback and thorough explanations. Students can investigate the work solutions for all the questions in detail, where steps are maintained on how to solve the question and the quicker reasoning behind it.

Practice Question Papers::

We recommend every student start with revision questions first, then slowly go to Time scored Question BANK.

As per NSW and Australian Curriculum, we published our question BANK for OC, SST, NAPLAN and HAST as per the new style and format.

Our revision question BANK has covered all the chapters and maintained them accordingly. If your child does wrong on any particular question, you can practice similar questions again.

Online One-To-One Personalised Tutoring::

We are ecstatic to announce that, along with the trial question, we are providing one-to-one personalised tutoring where we will mainly clear the concept where students struggle on a topic in the test. This online classroom is fully equipped with an advanced whiteboard, audio-video and screen sharing capabilities. For HAST, tutoring will be booked separately with extra – cost. Tutoring is not included in the above packages.

Writing Test Evaluation::

In our package, we are offering a writing test where the students will log in (in their own account, which is provided by Selective Trials) to our Learning Management Portal and go to the course from where they take the Exam in the same place student will have the option to submit their writing test. Each writing test is evaluated in detail by our experienced Australian English Tutors as per the Australian Curriculum.

Review::

Without feedback, it is impossible to get the same question right without any help. Feedback is crucial when building up your child’s stamina in getting the same type of question right the next Time. Also, please find out why your child got the question wrong in the first place; and fix them to grant them entry into their dream school, and the final result from the Exam will be a function of your child’s capabilities. Parents will be able to view the student’s performance relative to their peers and see the performance per question type and topic.

HAST Test Categories

(multiple choice: 45 minutes)

This test assesses a candidate’s ability to understand and interpret a range of texts, which may include fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction prose, together with diagrams, tables, charts, or maps.

The test draws on general abilities and the kinds of thinking typically used in the humanities and social sciences areas rather than any specific content knowledge.

Candidates are typically required to negotiate texts containing complex sentences, identify and relate main ideas, themes, or issues, identify key logical relations, discriminate between competing interpretations of texts; draw subtle and complex inferences, and evaluate assertions about events or characters on the basis of a global reading of the text or by focusing on key particulars.

(multiple choice: 40 minutes)

This test assesses a candidate’s ability to comprehend, interpret, and analyse mathematical information at the junior secondary level and mathematics and science at the middle and senior secondary levels. The skills assessed include comprehending and interpreting data, inferring, predicting, and drawing conclusions, reasoning, and problem-solving.

Candidates must apply logical and strategic thinking to work through the questions in the test.

The tasks are presented as numbers, text, diagrams, graphs and tables. Subject areas include number, measurement, space, time, logical relations and problem-solving for the mathematics component of the test

(multiple choice: 30 minutes)

This test assesses a candidate’s ability to use abstract reasoning skills in order to recognise relationships and perceive ideas at an abstract level. These types of skills are widely applicable across the curriculum and are related to successful academic outcomes.

Candidates are required to identify a pattern shown in a sequence of diagrams. The pattern may need to be continued or completed, or diagrams may need to be re-ordered to identify the middle term in a sequence. The diagrams comprising the pattern may have a number of elements (size, shape, shading, orientation) that need to be considered when deciphering the pattern.

In responding to the items, pattern recognition, hypothesising, and evaluation of evidence are important.

(Writing task: 25 minutes per task)

This test assesses a candidate’s ability to express thoughts and feelings in written English. Assessment is based on thought and content, structure and organization, expression, style, and the mechanics of the candidate’s response. The test provides a measure of generative and creative thinking in addition to language competency.

Two different types of writing tasks provide an opportunity to write for different purposes and audiences. Written Expression 1 is a discursive task that presents candidates with an issue or topic and prompts discussion of the ideas. The stimulus is usually verbal. Written Expression 2 is a creative task and prompts narrative or personal/narrative writing. The stimulus is usually visual.
